7 Things to Do to Beat the End of Summer Blues

The end of summer is right around the corner and then it’s back to school for a lot of us here in the RGV. This means no more late night runs to get munchies, no more midnight movies, no more (kinda) chill summer traffic, and perhaps worst of all – no more sleeping in! Oh the horror of it all.

But if you’re like me, then you’re going to try and squeeze out every last drop of summer. And believe you me. There’s still a little juice left in that sucker and we’re going to get it all out one way or another. So here is my list of 7 things to do beat the end of summer blues.

1South Padre Island

C’mon. It’s the beach. Tell me. What screams, “summer”, louder than SPI? I’m talking refreshing ocean breeze. Eternally rolling waves. Salt water pedicures. That 60 year-old-dude with the belly in the Speedo just strolling by. I can’t hate. Do you bro. Do you.

2Water Balloon Fight!

Sure your fingers are gonna hurt like a mutha after making those thousand and one water balloons. But if life has taught me anything, it’s that a water balloon fight is the perfect cure for those summer blues. There’s nothing quite like chucking a balloon at your brother’s face. And who doesn’t love getting hit full force with that one water balloon that doesn’t pop. Call me nostalgic, but water balloon fights really do seem to be the true meaning of summer.

3Stargazing

Yeah. Maybe it’s a little cheesy. But if you didn’t spend at least one summer night in your childhood, listening to your uncle’s scary stories, staring up at the night sky and just soaking all of life in, well…do yourself a favor and take the time to do a little bit of stargazing.

4End of Summer Fishing

I dare say we are a bit of fishing community down here in the RGV. And the beauty of living in this area is that we have water all around us. Whether at the canales, the resaca, or taking the short trip to the Island, that end of summer fishing day is as easy as 1,2,3.

5Movie Marathon

Summertime is all about indulging in those guilty pleasures that we usually can’t enjoy during the regular part of the year. For some reason, summer just brings out the rebel in us. Who doesn’t enjoy pizza at 12 A.M. while watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy in your grungiest PJs. C’mon. Don’t tell me I’m the only one. So how about one last movie marathon to send off the summer?

6One Last BBQ

Ok…so maybe it won’t be the last bbq of all time. But it should definitely be one to remember. Make it memorable by inviting all your family and friends. In fact, bust out the kiddie pool, bring out those margarita glasses, and laugh the night away.

7One Last Cat Nap

You’re going to miss those mid-day catnaps you were able to sneak in during the summer. You know. When the whole world calms down for just one moment and you get to just sit there wondering about life. Thinking about everything that can be. Everything you will be in the upcoming year. When the lightness and heaviness of it all weigh upon your eyes. And then…
