This year, Cinco de Mayo happens to fall on a Thursday. While this may not seem like a big deal to some, after almost a full week of work, you know that Thursdays hold a special purpose to us hard workers in the RGV—yes, I’m talking about our beloved Thirsty Thursdays.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of anything greater than Thirsty Thursday and Cinco de Mayo morphing into one spectacular, tequila-filled occasion. All I’ve got to say is get hydrated and start prepping!

While Cinco de Mayo isn’t celebrated  in the U.S. as elaborately as it is in Mexico, this doesn’t mean that we can’t embrace the spirit of this special occasion right here in the RGV. Whether you’re hispanic or you just happen to love tacos and tequila, Cinco de Mayo is the perfect time to let go of all of that work-related stress and have fun. Mostly because you deserve it.

At the simple thought of this holiday, it may be your first instinct to round up your friends and make plans to go to places like Hacienda del Patron or Palenque Grill. While there’s nothing wrong with such plans, this year try and step outside of the box. Mainly, this Cinco de Mayo, don’t be basic!

Instead, embrace your inner bartender and invite your friends over for an evening filled with crafted (and most importantly, not basic) tequila drinks. No matter what your tastes are, these drinks are certain to get you feeling the Cinco de Mayo spirit:

1. Creamsicle Margarita

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing more heavenly in this heat than an ice cream/alcohol hybrid treat!

Made with tequila, whipped vodka, triple sec, orange juice and a splash of lime, this tasty cocktail is inspired by the cult-favorite summer staple from our favorite raspa man, the creamsicle.

Minus the dairy yet full on the flavor, this is the perfect drink to whip up this Cinco de Mayo! I mean, there’s nothing more refreshing than what I like to call a ‘grown up’ popsicle. Cheers!

2. Watermelon Tequila Slush

After this drink idea, I’m pretty sure that plain old margarita you were thinking of ordering won’t cut it anymore!

This Cinco de Mayo, it’s time to ditch the cliches and live a little. What better way to do this than by downing a watermelon tequila slush?

Part refreshing (because there’s real watermelon in it) and part boozy, there’s seriously no going wrong with this one. What’s best is that this dream of a cocktail is made in your handy dandy blender. Easy and delicious.

3. Agave Margarita

Okay, I had to throw a little something in for those of you who like to stick to the classics (or simply play it safe).

While taco bars are some of the most magnificent places to find yourself in RGV, there’s no denying the fact that most margaritas tend to be sweetened with artificial flavors and chemicals. Not festive!

This Cinco de Mayo, embrace the traditional and opt for an yummy margarita sweetened with all-natural and delicious agave syrup. On the plus side, you can guzzle them down with no regrets!

4. Blackberry Habanero Margarita

Now, this one is for all you RGV risk-takers.

As Cinco de Mayo is all about celebrating Mexico’s victory against the French in 1862, there’s no better way to get in on the spirit of the celebration than with something a little spicy.

Warning: this margarita is not for the faint of heart. Made with juicy blackberries, white tequila and REAL habanero peppers, this is the perfect drink to whip up if you and your friends are in the mood for a little adventure.

5. Avocado Margarita

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without the mention of everyone’s favorite fruit (technically it is one—weird, huh?) and superfood: avocado!

If you like to have your guacamole with chips like a basic person would, it’s time to move forward and get with the times.

Let’s face it, they’re putting avocado on everything and in anything, and it’s about time the RGV took notice. What better occasion than Cinco de Mayo to test out this delicious (not to mention nutritious) cocktail?

This Cinco de Mayo, don’t forget to let your hair down a little (literally and metaphorically)! From Mission to Brownsville and beyond, you deserve a little break from the hustle and bustle of the workweek. There’s no better way to embrace this special holiday than by rounding up your closest friends and exploring your bartending potential. Just be sure to have them crash on your couch at the end of night or take a cab home. Come this Thursday/Cinco de Mayo, don’t stay thirsty!
