It can be easy to forget that McAllen is always bigger than we think it is. That was evident during Thursday, December 17th’s premier of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the highly anticipated addition to the Star Wars franchise. Even in our little corner of the Rio Grande Valley, the hype was real.
I attended the opening night showing at the new Cinemark Town Center on North Jackson Road by the former El Centro Mall. The theater, which opened in 2013, is one of biggest in the Valley and probably the best screen to watch Star Wars, short of going to an IMAX theater in San Antonio.
The size of the theater was probably the best part simply because it made efficiently seating a throng of people that much easier. The crowd, which I will say again was substantial, actually didn’t cause as much problems as one would assume.
The staff did a good job of keeping the lines orderly and funneling people into the proper theater. They also kept things on a tight schedule. The ticket kiosks also made it a breeze to pick up your tickets without wafting in a separate line for too long.
Again, the Pharr Town Center is probably the best place to watch Star Wars just south of San Antonio. The XD theater is 72 feet high and features a decent set of surround speakers that really crank up the immersion.
As for the movie? Trust me, it’s great and lives up to pretty much every expectation you’ll have. The viewing experience does play a substantial role, so the theater made a big difference.
At the end of the day, the movie will draw you in no matter how you watch it, but if you want to immerse yourself in the best way possible, Pharr Town Center is the best way to do it.
