City Café & Catering

I was excited to learn I’d be doing a Foodie review of City Café & Catering. I’d heard some of my peers talk about their positive experiences there, but I hadn’t had the pleasure of going myself.

Located in the heart of McAllen, City Café is very accessible but is still somewhat hidden from those who’ve not heard of it. From the moment I walked in, the environment was warm, welcoming and very friendly. The hostess was quick to show us to our table and offer the specials of the day. While she went through the specials, I couldn’t help but be enticed by the delicious smells coming from the kitchen. It was definitely a great way to work up an appetite.

Even though we went for dinner, we decided to order from the lunch menu. As an appetizer, we ordered the Spinach and Artichoke dip. It did not disappoint! They served just the right amount and was accompanied by small pieces of delicious hard baked bread. The homemade dip was creamy, warm and a great compliment to the bread pieces. You could feel it melting in your mouth. Overall, it was the perfect way to start a good meal.

While we waited for our entrees, I couldn’t help but admire their modern and creative decorations. The paper menu hanging by the counter was my personal favorite. It is a great way to let guests know about the specials of the day while browsing through the option-filled menu.

Our food arrived promptly and looked very appetizing. We ordered the Rib Eye Steak Sandwich and the Chipotle Chicken Wrap. Since I wanted to taste both entrees, we decided to share. The meat in the sandwich was moist, tender and perfectly seasoned. The horseradish brought out its flavor and made it even tastier. The sandwich came with a side of perfectly salted homemade French fries. The wrap’s flavor was very unique and the combination of grilled chicken with chipotle was amazing. It had plenty of avocado and was served on a delicious spinach and herb tortilla.

City Café & Catering is a great option for a casual night out. The restaurant’s atmosphere set the stage for a great experience, not to mention that the food and service were exceptional. Their menu offered so many mouthwatering and healthy dishes that it was hard to choose just one. I can’t wait to go back and try something new!

A Valley man to the core, I was born and raised in a small town near Rio Grande City. I obtained my Bachelors of Science in Dietetics from UTPA and am now a Registered Dietitian in the RGV working to change the public’s perception of preventative healthcare and healthy living. Health and fitness have always been my passion. Though the popular route to take in this field of health is physical fitness, I went for the nutrition route. Deciding to do so was easy for me. I believe that when it comes to getting healthier or losing weight, nutrition makes up 80% of the health goals while fitness makes up just 20%. Though the majority of my peers went on to become personal trainers or fitness specialists, I took the longer and more important route: nutrition.
