The cold weather may not last long in the RGV, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some good ‘ol winter activities. Whether for pleasure or play, the Frio Grande Ice Center in McAllen brings the best of northern winter sports to our warm southern region. With fall just around the corner, ice-skating and hockey will be in full swing, and now there’s no need to miss out on these fun activities.

RGV Youth Hockey Team on the Rise

If your kid is in search of something new in the way of sports – and an escape from the scorching South Texan sun – the RGV Youth Hockey Association may be the answer to his prayers! The Frio Grande Ice Center hosts an active Youth Hockey Association of about 50 kids and growing!

The team practices weekly and competes periodically in tournaments against teams from San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Houston and Austin. Believe it or not, the RGV Junior Killer Bees earned 1st Place in the President’s Day Tournament.

Contrary to popular belief, hockey is not very expensive in the RGV. The regular registration fee is $399 for the whole season with a $50 discount per each additional sibling. There’s plenty of protective equipment, so you can rest assured that your child is safe during practices and game time. In fact, the team has an equipment sharing program in place to ensure that each child is fully equipped at no additional expense to parents.

The RGV Youth Hockey Association will introduce a “Learn to Play” group for first timers who are eight years old and under. The registration fee is only $99! For more information on this program, or to register your child with the youth team, email rgvhockey@gmail.com.
