The privately owned Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg is hosting a summer fishing tournament to benefit the McAllen-based organization.

The annual “Fishing for Hope” Tournament in South Padre Island hosted by DHR, now in its 10th year, is kicking off on Saturday, August 22nd, 2014 from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. You’re invited to take part in this awesome cause while enjoying a day of fun under the sun at SPI’s fishing hotspots. To register, or for sponsorship information, please call the DHR Events Department at 956.362.3140.

In past years, the event has raised over $1.2 million for the Hope Family Health Center (HFHC) in McAllen, a nonprofit organization that provides free medical counseling care for uninsured families in the RGV. Let’s make this year’s tournament a huge success!

HFHC and DHR Committed to the RGV Community

HFHC’s mission is rooted in the healthcare needs of local people. Their goal is to provide services to families and individuals of the Rio Grande Valley who are not insured and who do not qualify for Medicare, Medicaid, County Indigent or any other form of coverage.

All men, women and children cared for at HFHC are low income, with the majority falling 200% below the identified federal poverty level. In the first quarter of 2013, the clinic received more than 200 new applications for medical and counseling care. Most of the new applications were for patients who had not visited a physician in recent years and were suffering from advanced illnesses. The clinic held more than 4,400 medical appointments and 1,000 counseling sessions that year alone.

Since the clinic first opened its doors in 1996, all medical providers, physicians, nurses, physician assistants and phlebotomists have volunteered their time. The clinic has never charged patients. Instead, patients are asked, when available, to leave a $5 – $10 donation for services rendered.

To maintain this much-needed health clinic for RGV residents, DHR has raised over $1.2 million for Hope Family Health Center through the “Fishing for Hope” Tournament. In 2014, with the help of sponsors and community members, DHR surpassed their goal of $250,000 and were able to donate $270,000 to the Hope Family Health Center. The amount donated from “Fishing for Hope” has helped the clinic fulfill its mission to ensure that each person entering their doors receives the specialized care they deserve.
