Spicy Mamas

My friends like to sneak away from time to time for a low-key girls’ lunch while the kids are at school. Thai Red Chili’s in West McAllen was our pick this time around! This restaurant has good, reasonably priced food served in a casual setting. My friend Kimberly swears by the popular Pad Thai dish and the ultra-sweet Thai Tea. For this visit, I met Jessica who, years ago, wouldn’t come to Thai Red Chili’s because it had “too many sauces”. She was a convert after her first visit, however, and quickly agreed to be my foodie date.

We ordered two appetizers recommended by our waitress. The first was fried wantons filled with minced meat, shrimp, and cream cheese. Wow! The cream cheese was a smooth and creamy surprise complementing the crispy outer shell of the wanton. A dunk in the sweet plum sauce made the perfect bite. Generally, we order the spring rolls – Meagan’s favorite – but the waitress recommended the Soft Roll, and we decided to go for it. The Soft Rolls had loosely wrapped shrimp, crab, egg, and bean thread. The rolls were topped with a sweet and savory peanut sauce which gave it a great flavor.

Ordering an entree at Thai Red Chili’s is wonderful because they will customize each dish to your taste palate. Select the entree of your choice with vegetables, tofu, chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp and customize the amount of spice from level one (mild) to level four (very spicy). I like spicy food, and I have to say that level 3 is perfect for me. My friends generally stick with a lower level. Today, Jessica ordered Cashew Nut Shrimp and I ordered Pad Thai. The lunch menu includes soup or salad and a spring roll; a lot of food for $8.59. The Cashew Nut Shrimp is a favorite of Jessica’s because she loves the complement of the salty crunch of the cashews with the savory sauce and shrimp. She admitted that she never orders anything else! The Pad Thai was also excellent. The peanuts gave it a slightly sweet flavor and the vegetables were very fresh.

The best way to end a meal at Thai Red Chili’s is with one of the fried ice cream dishes. My kids beg to eat there just for that! It is a rich, decadent, sweet way to end the meal!

Foodie:
I love food! I’m all about enjoying a great meal with friends and family. Isn’t that what life is all about? The variety of culinary styles and ethnic foods available in the RGV takes me back to my home state of New Jersey – which is just as eclectic. As a gal with a palate for almost anything, and as a mother with two finicky eaters, I never struggle to find new and exciting eateries.
